Google bez ostrzeżenia wyrzucił z Google Play zdecentralizowany komunikator – Element. Powód? Złe treści…

Zerknijcie na projekt Matrix:

Matrix is an open source project that publishes the Matrix open standard for secure, decentralised, real-time communication, and its Apache licensed reference implementations.

Mamy tutaj szyfrowanie end-2-end, połączenia głosowe/video, rozmowy grupowe. A całość dająca możliwość postawienia i swojego serwera. Do tego całość jest zdecentralizowana, co twórcy tłumaczą w ten sposób:

There is no single point of control or failure in a Matrix conversation which spans multiple servers: the act of communication with someone elsewhere in Matrix shares ownership of the conversation equally with them. Even if your server goes offline, the conversation can continue uninterrupted elsewhere until it returns.

No więc patrząc bardziej klasycznie, jest jednak pewien single point of failure – a jest nim klient komunikatora. Teoretycznie każdy może napisać klienta, choć bodaj jedynym popularnym jest Element (dostępny w przeglądarce, App Store czy Google Play).

Tymczasem klient ten został bez żadnego ostrzeżenia wyrzucony (czy „zawieszony”) z Google Play:

Jak widzicie, zostało od razu podane alternatywne źródło klienta, więc i single point of failure został w zasadzie zlikwidowany…

W każdym razie po jakimś czasie okazało się, ze chodzi o „abusive content” gdzieś w sieci komunikatora:

Niektórzy wskazują, że jest to porównywalne z zabanowaniem przeglądarki (na zasadzie – no tak, można przeglądarką internetową przeglądać 'abusive content’):

Na jednym wdechu można powiedzieć, że obecnie sytuacja się ~rozwiązała. Komunikator jest ponownie dostępny w Google Play:

We received a call from a VP at Google who apologised for the bad communication from Google and explained the situation, which related to some extremely abusive content which was accessible on the default matrix.org homeserver.  Our Trust and Safety team had already identified and acted on this content to enforce the server’s terms of use
